Teachers & Schools
In Pakistan's elite circles and schools, the children are largely protected and unaware of the way children from less fortunate backgrounds live. As a parent/teacher I feel it is so important to shed some light upon how children in the same age group are living. It is our responsibility as parents and teachers to bring this awareness about. If you are a parent or teacher or run a school, kindly look into teaching the youth of our nation this valuable lessons. Select a charity and let the children be actively involved in this cause.
Make donating more appealing: I think it is more important to focus on how to make giving more appealing to young people and how to create an appreciation of the importance of charity at all different stages in a young person's life (school, university, entering the workplace etc).
Make it easy for young people to donate: Building a gift box is a relatively easy operation when compared to collecting money. When the school year starts and you're buying your children new clothes and stationary, it gives you a sense of great pride to be able to do the same for someone who will never have such beautiful things.
Provide young people with clear information about the impact the charity makes: your school can personally select the orphanage or deserving school where the boxes will be handed out. Learn a bit about this place and let your students know where these boxes will be going.
Recruit young people to volunteering: By engaging a young person in your work through volunteering, they are seeing first hand the impact you have on someone else's life. It also makes them aware of how lucky they are as human beings when they go home or back to school and see how fortunate they are. It is a huge and very essentials perspective shift for a child.
Plan in advance what you would like to put in your box. Let the children pick out items and explain to them that these children have never before received a gift.
When your school does decide to visit the selected charity to donate the boxes, feel free to take along snacks and drinks. You cannot imagine the excitement at seeing the gift boxes along with a cold juice and a packet of chips or biscuits. They will remember this day for the entire year to come!
